PROJECT PLAN & TIMETABLE REVIEW // DGD230

This trimester for the Cosmos Cosmetics branding I created a project plan and schedule to follow. In the past following a project plan through group work was easy as everyone had a role to play and a methodology to follow. This trimester was harder to do this as I was the only one following the project plan and schedule. It was harder to follow a methodology as I didn’t have to have weekly meetings, however with the help of my schedule, that I was continuously updating as I went, I managed to set weekly sprints for myself in order to complete my deliverables.
This worked well in the end and I feel as if I did a good job in following what I created in the first few weeks.

This trimester was a slow one when it came to collaborations. At the beginning of the trimester I had pitched my video ad idea to the studio three film students and had asked for help in creating it. I received no messages asking to help me even though in the class some of the students said that they were willing to help.

However, I managed to find a collaboration with an animation student who animated the cosmos cosmetics logo. I came into contact with him through the SAE Interdisciplinary group on Facebook. He was very helpful and animated it within two days for me.

Comments:

  • Love the colours! I like your branding
  • Love it! Annette SSA
  • Great work. It would be nice to see a menu bar at the top so the website feels more grounded. Seems a little bit too floaty. Really lovely colours and aesthetic. A bit concerned on relying on HD pictures on background.
  • Business card is simple and effective. I really like the ‘Z’ logo too. Nice and colourful.
  • Love the website!
  • Branding is really nice! Love the business cards
  • The Zelda Jones logo is epic!! Really nice colours.
  • Princess Leia (response to photgraph)
  • WordPress & Wix (for website building)
  • Love how you’ve carried your brand right through your cosmos project. Logo is excellent, website is very clean & thought out. Great work you’re very pasisonate.
  • Straight forward – everything enchances the brands overall theme
  • B/Card: Make white line more fine
  • Posters: Move logo down “same as leading as above”
  • Sort out email, fb & instagram to match
  • I like the A3 posters with the brighter background
  • Very thought out & well researched
  • Incorporate more close up beauty shots of makeup, maybe hone in on specific features like the eyes for eyeshadow, lips for lipstick etc.

CREATIVE PRACTICES // DGD230

This trimester I have learnt a lot about my creative style and how I complete my tasks. Some things that I have learnt are:

  • Following tutorials
    • I have learnt a lot about following tutorials this trimester as it gives me the opportunity to create something new and interesting that looks effective. For example, I followed a tutorial to create the SYNERGY banner for the Trimester 2 2016 Design, Web and Animation exhibition.
    • Synergy fixed.png
    • Additionally, I followed a tutorial to make a lightsaber in adobe illustrator. This was also fun as it gave me a deeper look to how other people can see shapes and how they create amazing pieces of art.
    • Logo
  • Listening to client briefs and delivering a concept in a short amount of time
    • Early in the trimester, we had a visit from the head of the Kyra + Kenja business. It was great to do a quick turn around pitch and presentation for him and I learnt a lot about picky customers.
  • Client communication
    • I have heard a lot about void clients before but experiencing it for myself was a learning experience. I had signed up to help an audio student create a cassette tape cover for his EP, however, we only ever had one meeting and I received little to no creative direction and there was no communication between us.
  • Self-Branding
    • Creating self-branding was very hard and annoying for me to do. I am a picky person and could never commit to a logo in the past. However, I am very happy with what I created as part of my self-branding and won’t be changing it for a while.

SELF- REFLECTION REPORT // DGD230

1. Logo BTP copy

Cosmos Cosmetics was the brand that I created for my Studio 3 branding assignment. It is a galaxy themed cosmetics company to be sold Australia wide. There were a lot of positives and negatives found while completing this company.

POSITIVES:

  • Photography
    • The photography for Cosmos Cosmetics was by far my favourite part of the whole branding as it was a lot of fun to shoot and experiment with. I love using imagery in my designs and having a set of high-quality photographs that I created was amazing.
  • Logo
    • I liked the logo I chose as it was diverse and could be used as both the full logo or just an icon. It was fun to experiment and create this logo and has made creating my deliverables fun for myself. Additionally, I also really like the logo as I collaborated with an animation student to animate it and I loved how it turned out.
  • Business cards
    • I like the business cards I created as they can be customised for the area where it is sent to. However, I don’t like the idea of having the circular die-cut in my business card as I feel as if it is unneeded
  • Packaging
    • At first, I didn’t like my packaging but after a re-design I found myself liking the finished product especially after printing it out and creating it. Packaging is something I will need to work on in the future as during my rough stages I would find dimensions difficult to work with, especially when working on a computer screen. This is something I would like to improve on in the future.
  • Posters
    • I really like my A1 poster but wish the gallery walk was a week earlier before I ordered my A1 poster to be printed as I received a lot of great feedback to add to it. I think it is effective and will definitely¬†draw in customers when seen.
  • Stickers
    • I really liked my stickers as they are practical and fit the style guide perfectly.

NEGATIVES:

  • Video advertisement
    • I don’t like the video advertisement created as I was unable to get the assistance of film students in time and had to create it myself resulting in a low quality and badly edited ad. I am not happy with this and given the chance would re-create it with proper help.
  • Online social media advertisements
    • I feel like my social media adverts were weak as in the cosmetic industry these days a lot of advertisements for makeup companies come from beauty tutorials and makeup gurus giving their opinions on the products. I would reconsider turning my online advertisement to being a “paid sponsor” from a popular youtube personality like Nikki Tutorials, etc.
  • Website
    • I am not 100% happy with the website as I wanted to change a lot more things with the website, however, the platform I used to create it gave me limited options resulting in a poorly designed website that was far from my original concept.

PORTERS 5 FORCES // DGD230

  1. Competition in the industry
    1. Major competition in the industry:
        1. Urban Decay

        2. BH Cosmetics

        3. Zoeva

        4. Kat Von D

        5. Colour Pop

        6. Bobbi Brown

        7. Rimmel London
        8. Lo’Oreal Paris
  2. Potential of new entrants into the industry
    1. The potential of having a new brand in the industry creates more jobs for workers, more content for online creatives to showcase and new things for cosmetics enthusiasts to consume.
  3. Power of suppliers
    1. Prices of cosmos cosmetics products will not fluxuate in price regardless of where it is sold (taking into cosideration of the dollar value in selected country)
  4. Power of customers
    1. Popular products sold will most likeley be reduced slightly in price due to high demands and newer products will be elevated in price to bring in the lost revenue from the reductions.
  5. The threat of substitute products
    1. As the cosmetic industry and the work that goes on with it, having mixed cosmetics for an event is fine as l0ng as every brand is referenced clearly.

5 C’S OF MARKETING // DGD230

  1. Customer
    1. The needs of the customers through Cosmos Cosmetics is high-quality makeup with clean and clear branding for them to follow. Photography of products and swatches is a must as well as the details of the product stated clearly on the packaging.
  2. Company
    1. The company can manage to provide the customer’s needs through our SWOT analysis

Strengths:
Innovative theme of branding
Themed company has never been done before in cosmetics

Weaknesses:
Difficulties in getting customer loyalty

Opportunities:
Collaborating with other brands/ celebrities for promotion

Threats:
Larger companies copying the pallets & selling them as their own

  1. Competition
    1. The main competition for Cosmos Cosmetics are:
      1. Urban Decay

      2. BH Cosmetics

      3. Zoeva

      4. Kat Von D

      5. Colour Pop

      6. Bobbi Brown

  2. Collaborates
    1. Cosmos Cosmetics would have a lot of partnerships when it comes to creating the makeup itself as it would be produced in many different countries once the brand is able to go worldwide. Additionally, collaborations with other cosmetics brands is a possibility for cross promotions (e.g. the NARS/Steven Klein pallet).
  3. Context
    1. Political Issues:
      1. Animal testing: Cosmos Cosmetics WILL NOT test on animals ever
    2. Economic Issues:
